Bringing Home the Bacon

Last night Steven got his first deer of the season. (Deer are small here...you need a few to fill the freezer)He hunts right in our backyard from a tree stand with his bow. He comes home from work and changes into his hunting gear...including his lucky plaid pajama pants!.....and gets into the stand until dark.

We are missing our venison around here because he didn't get a deer at all last year. The year before he got a big doe and a really big 12 point buck. Last night's deer was just a young buck, but it will still take up some room in the freezer. He and the kids stayed up really late last night de-boning all of the meat. The girls even helped gut the deer and got a good anatomy lesson. (They are WAY more into that kind of stuff than the boys are.)

We normally turn most of the deer meat into sausage. This year I am just not in the mood for the week's worth of work making sausage.....and turning my kitchen into a bloody mess. So Steven is out at the processor's right now dropping the meat off to let THEM make the sausage.....woo-hoo! It is still a really good price for deer sausage. I can't wait until it is done. Yum-yum!

I just hope that Steven waits a week or so before he goes out again. He still has tags for another buck and 2 more doe. He will probably only get one more though.

And before anyone gets upset that he killed Bambi let me assure you that the deer population is in no danger around here. They scurry around here like cockroaches and eat up every plant in your flowerbed and jump the fence into your garden and eat up all of your hard work. They aren't as cute and innocent as they appear. LOL
